Helping a parent or grandparent move out of the family home is one of the bigger jobs a Dayton family takes on. It is part logistics and part emotion: decades of furniture, photos, and keepsakes, plus a new place that is usually smaller. This senior moving checklist breaks the job into manageable steps so moving day feels calm instead of rushed, whether the move is across Kettering or from Oakwood to a smaller place in Centerville.
Herk’s Moving is a veteran-owned local mover at 4182 Kettering Blvd, Moraine, OH 45439. Owner Matt Gwin is a 100% disabled veteran and a University of Dayton alum. Our crews are background-checked, and we’re open 6am to 10pm, so you can call when it works for your family. Ready to talk dates? Request a free quote or call (937) 903-0662.
Six to eight weeks out: plan the new space first
The most common senior-move problem is bringing more furniture than the new home can hold. Start with the destination, not the old house.
- Get a floor plan or measure each room at the new apartment, condo, or senior community.
- Ask the building about move-in rules: reserved elevator times, loading-door hours, parking for the truck, and any paperwork needed before move-in.
- Decide which pieces go first: the bed, a favorite chair, the dresser, and the dining table usually make the cut.
- Pick a move date that leaves a few days of overlap, so nobody has to unpack and clean out the old house on the same day.
Four to six weeks out: sort, share, and downsize
Downsizing goes faster when you work one room at a time and keep the sessions short. A couple of hours a day beats one exhausting weekend.
- Use four labels for everything: Keep, Family, Donate, and Toss.
- Let family members claim heirlooms early, and arrange for them to pick items up before moving day so nothing gets loaded by mistake.
- Photograph sentimental items that won’t fit. The photos take up no space and keep the memory.
- Gather important papers, medications, and valuables into one box or bag that travels with the family, not on the truck.
Two to three weeks out: packing and paperwork
Packing a whole household is hard on anyone, and it is especially tiring for older adults. This is the stage where most families decide to get help. Our packing and unpacking service can handle the kitchen, closets, or the entire house, and we can unpack at the new place so the bed is made and the kitchen works on night one.
- Label every box with the room it goes to in the new home, not the old one.
- Pack a “first night” box: medications, glasses, hearing aid batteries, phone chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, sheets, and a few kitchen basics.
- File a change of address with USPS and update banks, doctors, pharmacies, Social Security or VA, and any subscriptions.
- Schedule utilities to shut off at the old home and turn on at the new one.
Moving week: keep the day simple
On moving day, the best job for your loved one is usually not lifting or directing the crew. Plan for them to spend the morning with a family member or at the new place while the loading happens.
- Walk through the old house with the crew lead and point out what stays and what goes.
- Tape a simple room map at the new home’s door so furniture lands in the right spot the first time.
- Set up the bedroom and bathroom first. A familiar bed and a working bathroom make the first night much easier.
- Do a last walk-through of closets, the attic, the garage, and the basement before the truck leaves.
Choosing a mover for a senior move in the Dayton area
Ask any mover how they handle smaller buildings, elevators, and tight hallways, and whether the same crew will load and unload. Ask who will be inside the home. Herk’s Moving crews are background-checked, which matters when strangers are walking through a parent’s house. We handle residential moves across the Dayton area, including Kettering, Oakwood, Centerville, and Moraine. If the family is renting a truck or container and just needs muscle, our loading and unloading service covers the heavy lifting. See every town we serve on our service area page.

Senior moving FAQ
How far ahead should we book movers for a senior move?
Start calling about four to six weeks ahead, and earlier if the date is tied to a senior community move-in day or a home closing. Month-end and weekend dates fill up first.
Can you pack and unpack for my parents?
Yes. We offer packing and unpacking on its own or as part of a full move, so you can have us pack the whole house or just the rooms that are hardest to tackle.
Do you only move whole households?
No. Smaller moves are welcome too, like moving a few pieces of furniture into an apartment or loading a rental truck for a family member.
How do I get a quote?
Call (937) 903-0662 any day between 6am and 10pm, or request a quote online. Tell us both addresses, the move date, and roughly how much is going.
